Welcome to the Rotary Club Plovdiv International.
Our ambition is to create an international Rotary club in which the official language is English. This way, we want to be in rhythm with the globalisation of the region, and the fact that foreign investment is increasing, along with the new businesses, businessmen and students permanently residing here. We wish to welcome them to join our club, to offer them a friendly atmosphere and to facilitate their integration into our community.
Through our initiatives we also strive to be creative and to engage the help of people from different perspectives, who have fresh ideas and offer new solutions to the contemporary problems of our society.
We hope to build a rich heritage of serving our community in Plovdiv and internationally with various development projects.
We believe there is value in meeting in person each week and helping spark new friendships; we foster connections with other local development groups or service organisations.
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив) is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest in Europe after the capital Sofia, dating back to the 6th millennium BC.
It has also been known as Philippopolis (after Philip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), and Trimontium (meaning “The Three Hills”). More informally, Plovdiv is often referred to as “The City of the Seven Hills”, because historically it was developed on seven syenite hills (of which 6 still remain).
The city boasts more than 200 archaeological sites, remains of medieval walls and towers, two ancient theatres, churches, Ottoman baths and mosques, numerous museums, art, galleries and cultural institutions, as well as The Old Town, a well-preserved old quarter from the National Revival period (1762–1878) known for its Bulgarian Renaissance architectural style and narrow paved streets.
An important economic, cultural and educational center, it hosts popular artistic events an international fairs throughout the year. Plovdiv will be the Bulgarian host of the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
